Murmuration Lab

Thousands of birds. Three simple rules. No conductor. Change the conditions and watch a collective pattern emerge.

● RUNNING 700 BIRDS
-- FPS
Move your mouse over the flock or touch it to scatter the birds.

Three rules. One collective pattern.

01 · Separation

Each bird steers away from neighbors that are too close.

02 · Alignment

Each bird tends to match the heading of nearby birds.

03 · Cohesion

Each bird tends to remain close to its neighbors.

Scientific note: This is an educational, two-dimensional Boids simulation using distance-based (metric) neighborhoods. Real starling flocks are three-dimensional, and studies suggest predominantly topological interactions with roughly six or seven neighbors. The screen has artificial boundaries to keep every bird visible. It illustrates an organizing principle, not a complete biological model. Reference: Reynolds (1987).
